There are a variety of different ways to approach a job interview depending on the type of industry. In this blog, we want to target the warehouse industry specifically. As warehouse staffing specialists, we feel like we are in a great position to help others find and keep jobs in the warehouse industry.
So without further ado, let’s get started with these interview tips!
In the event that a hiring manager has made contact, and both of you have agreed to hold an in-person interview, make sure that you’re prepared! Update and print two hard copies of your resume and gather any certifications that may give you an edge. Relative certifications for the warehouse industry may include a Certification in Warehouse Management (CWM), a Forklift certification, or an OSHA Health and Safety certification.
Next, find out where the interview location is, and how long it will take you to reach the destination. You want to give yourself enough elbow room to arrive at the location at least 15 minutes early. A good rule to live by is planning to be at any appointment at least 15 minutes early – otherwise, consider yourself late. If the interview is located on the job site, it would also be a great time to consider how your daily commutes would work out.
Finally, do some research on the employer. The internet is your friend for all inquiries! Look up reviews for the employer on popular sites such as Glassdoor, Yelp, and the Better Business Bureau. Make sure you’re informed as much as possible so that you have an accurate picture of what you’re getting into. Most importantly, get an idea of what kind of work you will be doing, and consider if it’s something you will be capable of doing every day.
Wear Proper Attire
In most cases, it’s considered a good practice to show up to interviews with a professional appearance. If you’re applying for a sales or customer service position, a tie and slacks would be acceptable. However, this sort of attire is not typically required for a warehouse position. In fact, some might consider this overkill. In reality, the most important factors for your personal appearance is grooming and cleanliness. Undoubtedly, it would be best to steer clear from wearing t-shirts, but you don’t need to go as far as wearing a tie. However, if you still think that ties and slacks would be the better route to take, don’t let us stop you.
First Impressions Matter – Make Your’s Count
One of the most important interview tips we can give you for a warehouse position is to make sure your first impression is a memorable one!
The first time you meet anyone new is likely the way they will always remember you. If you’re trying to get hired, be polite and courteous to everyone you meet at the company. This will include everyone from facility maintenance, reception, and management. Remember that the likelihood of acquiring the job you’re applying to will depend mostly on how well you treat others you work with.
In addition, you want to make sure that you’re portraying positive body language. Having a firm handshake combined with self-assured eye contact can illustrate confidence. Also, make sure you actively listen when others speak to you. Appearing as if you are uninterested in what others have to say can come off as rude and unfriendly. Be Ready to Receive Tough Questions
Employers want to know who you are. They want to know how you interact with others, how you will fit into their culture, whether or not you will be capable of doing the job, and if there might be any potential red flags that may prevent you from doing your part.
Workplace culture plays an important role. Merriam-Webster defines culture as “the beliefs, customs, arts, etc., of a particular society, group, place, or time.” Every workplace has its own distinct culture. And a lot of questions will be directed towards trying to figure out if you will fit in. One person that does not fit into the established culture can change the entire dynamic of the environment. Furthermore, know what your strengths and weaknesses are. Are you great at math, but have terrible writing skills? Perhaps you are an excellent organizer and public speaker. Being comfortable and knowledgeable on where your skills are and aren’t can help the interviewer get a better understanding of where you can fit in, and how you can help build the company.
Don’t Be Shy, You Can Ask Questions Too
The interview isn’t just about you; it is also about the employer. Needless to say, this would be a great time to shine a spotlight on the interviewer as well. Try to figure out what the core values of the company are, overall business goals for the next 5-10 years, and what the biggest challenges the company faces. Asking questions are great! It shows that you have a genuine interest in the organization and are eager to contribute. However, try not to interview the person interviewing. Taking too much control of the interaction may be interpreted as arrogance.
